The streaming year 2024 has just begun. The audience can still look forward to many highlights.
The series
“Kleo” Season 2: The fast-paced action thriller series with Jella Haase and Dimitrij Schaad continues on Netflix. In the summer of 2022, even US best-selling author Stephen King raved about the German production. The showrunner and author team HaRiBo (“Para – Wir sind King”, “4 Blocks”), consisting of Hanno Hackfort, Richard Kropf and Bob Konrad, is also responsible for season 2.
“Disko 76”: RTL has announced a series that highlights disco fever. Luise Aschenbrenner and Jannik Schümann, among others, can be seen in the high-end series, about which it is said: “In 1976, the disco wave spread to Bochum: overwhelming desire for freedom meets stuffy conventions, disco beats meet solid hits, glamor meets coal dust. “
“Kaiser Karl”: Disney is bringing a series about Karl Lagerfeld this year. It is a French-American co-production with Daniel Brühl in the role of the German fashion designer who died in 2019. The first six episodes probably take place mainly in the 70s and 80s.
“The New Look”: And another fashion series set in Paris – the focus here is on Christian Dior (Ben Mendelsohn), Coco Chanel (Juliette Binoche) and their contemporaries “who had to struggle with the horrors of the Second World War and the gave rise to modern fashion,” as Apple TV puts it. John Malkovich and Glenn Close also star. The ten-part series starts on February 14th (three episodes), followed by one episode each Wednesday until April 3rd.
“Ripley”: Patricia Highsmith’s novel “The Talented Mr. Ripley” has been adapted several times, for example with Alain Delon or 25 years ago with Matt Damon and Jude Law. Incidentally, the content of the hype film “Saltburn” is similar to the Highsmith material. Now the story about fraudster-turned-murderer Tom Ripley is coming to Netflix as an eight-part series. Andrew Scott plays the psychopathic protagonist.
“Star Trek: Discovery”: The “Star Trek” spin-off that revitalized the “Star Trek” universe is entering its fifth and final season. Only this much is known about the plot: Captain Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the crew of the USS Discovery encounter an ancient, mysterious force on their journey through the galaxy, which also arouses the interest of dangerous enemies. The final season is expected to premiere in April on the Paramount streaming service.
Engelke and Pastewka: Anke Engelke and Bastian Pastewka have often appeared together in front of the camera in comedy projects, but now they are doing it for the first time in a real series. The production with the working title “Never Ever” is from btf (bildundtonfarbik, “How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast)”) and will probably come to Amazon Prime Video at the end of ’24.
“Shogun”: Lavish new adaptation of James Clavell’s bestseller. An English pilot survives a shipwreck off the coast of Japan in the 17th century. John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) becomes an advisor to the powerful lord Yoshi Toranaga, who has to prevail against all sorts of enemies in the civil war. Toranaga and Blackthorne’s fate is inextricably linked to the mysterious interpreter Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai). 10 parts, from February 27th at Disney.
“Kafka”: It’s the 100th anniversary of Franz Kafka’s death. The ARD honors him with the six-part series “Kafka”. The main role is played by Joel Basman (“Eldorado KaDeWe – Now is our time”), surrounded by a star ensemble including David Kross, Liv Lisa Fries, Lia von Blarer and Robert Stadlober. Director David Schalko (“Altes Geld”) directs the script by Daniel Kehlmann. From the end of March in the ARD media library.
“Habibi Baba Boom”: A funny dramedy series, full of charm, chaos and culture clash. Sami (Omar El-Saeidi), a German with Muslim roots, balances curvaceously through his western and eastern worlds. He regularly learns that between desire and reality, he cannot always please everyone. The eight-part Disney series is scheduled to appear this year.
Film
“Damsel”: The heroine of this fantasy film from Netflix thinks no harm when she is supposed to marry a beautiful prince. But the fairytale wedding turns out to be a dangerous trap. The bride ends up in the cave of a fire-breathing dragon – and has to fight for her life. “Stranger Things” star Millie Bobby Brown stars in the action-packed film. From March 8th on Netflix.
“Enemy”: Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal as a young farming couple whose lives one day change forever. Because he is selected for a space research program on a station in Earth orbit. The US feature film by Garth Davis is based on a novel by Iain Reid. Prime Video has secured the rights.
“Ferrari”: Director Michael Mann has created great action cinema with films like “Heat” and “Miami Vice”. In his new film “Ferrari” (from March 1st on Prime Video) he traces the life of the automobile manufacturer Enzo Ferrari. Elaborate camera technology puts the racing cars in the spotlight perfectly. The film features a number of stars including Adam Driver, Penelope Cruz and Patrick Dempsey.
“Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F”: 40 years after the release of the first part of “Beverly Hills Cop”, Eddie Murphy will be seen again in his most famous role as Detective Axel Foley in the summer of 2024. The fourth part of the action crime series is streaming on Netflix.
