Lewis Capaldi (26) fears that he will soon have to end his career due to various physical and psychological problems. “I hate exaggerations, but there’s a very real possibility that I’ll have to quit music,” he told the Sunday Times.

Most recently, the singer-songwriter caught bronchitis. In March 2023 he then postponed several concerts, including gigs in Munich and Stuttgart. Probably triggered by the bronchitis, he suffered from severe dizzy spells. Capaldi even had to call the Scottish health service NHS 24, which takes care of patients outside of doctors’ opening hours. “I wanted to hear that nothing terribly bad was happening to me.”

The Scot explains the dizziness with a mixture of different triggers. In addition to the bronchitis, he was suffering from an ear infection and had discontinued an anti-anxiety medication.

In general, Capaldi’s mental problems bother him more than his physical ones. In addition to the anxiety states mentioned, he suffers from impostor syndrome. People believe that they do not deserve success and will soon be exposed as a scammer.

The fatal thing about Capaldi’s mental symptoms: They are intensified by making music. “Otherwise I can be fine for months,” he told the Sunday Times. “So it’s a strange situation,” Capaldi continued. For now, the compromise is worth it. But if it gets to a point where I’m doing irreparable damage to myself, I’ll stop.”

Unlike many colleagues, Lewis Capaldi does not suffer from his fame. “Being famous is easy. You’re walking around and people are greeting you. What’s so hard about that?” he asked, laughing. The pressure, the “mammoth tours” and the expectations to which he is exposed tend to get him down. “This is certainly terrifying for anyone, let alone a major hypochondriac like me.”

In the fall of 2022, Lewis Capaldi made it public that he had been diagnosed with Tourette’s syndrome. The tics that break out in this nervous system disorder get worse and worse on stage. “I’m trying to get it under control. If I can’t do it, I’m screwed,” said the singer. It gets better when he plays the guitar. But I hate playing the guitar.”
