When the miniseries “Griselda” appears on Netflix on January 25, 2024, fans of actress Sofia Vergara (51) will probably discover a new side to their star. According to the streaming service, the series is based on the life of the Colombian businesswoman Griselda Blanco (1943-2012). The mother of four was also called the “godmother” of cocaine. In the 1970s and 1980s, she was considered one of the most vicious drug cartel leaders in Miami.

In a teaser trailer for the six-part Netflix series, Sofia Vergara can already be seen as Griselda Blanco – including some scars running across her face. In the short clip, Griselda appears to want to make a drug deal with a group of men. “Who’s in charge then,” asks one of those involved. Whereupon Vergara stares directly into the camera with a stern expression on her face while menacing music plays in the background.

In addition to Vergara, “Griselda” also includes actors Alberto Guerra (40) as Dario Sepúlveda and Christian Tappan (51) as Arturo Mesa. Sofia Vergara and Colombian producer Luis Balaguer worked on the series for eight years, according to Netflix. According to the announcement, producers Eric Newman and Andrés Baiz, the makers of the series hits “Narcos” and “Narcos: Mexico,” are behind the six one-hour episodes.

This could be the first time Vergara has caused a major international sensation with a leading role in a drama. The actress celebrated her breakthrough in Hollywood with the comedy “Lots of Trouble” (2002). She is also known for the role of Gloria Delgado-Pritchett, which she played in the comedy series “Modern Family” from 2009 to 2020. She received several Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for this. Sofia Vergara was also a guest judge on Heidi Klum’s (50) show “Germany’s Next Top Model” this year. The “Modern Family” star also sits on the jury of “America’s Got Talent” with Klum.
