Die-hard “Game of Thrones” fans have had to be patient for a long time. Not as far as series production is concerned – after all, HBO has now officially confirmed another prequel from Westeros after “House of the Dragon”. But fans have been waiting for the final two books to close the A Song of Ice and Fire saga for over a decade. Will “Game of Thrones” inventor George R.R. Martin (74) never finish the world-famous story from Westeros?
To spread news and communicate with the public, George R.R. Martin’s blog “Not a Blog” on his official website. In the articles from the last few weeks, which he publishes at regular intervals, he does not go into the current status of the two pending “Game of Thrones” books “The Winds of Winter” and “A Dream of Spring”.
In December 2022, however, there was a small ray of hope that at least “The Wind of Winters” could soon be completed. “I took a little time off over the holidays, I must confess (…), but now I’m back and working… I’m working on so many things that my head could explode. Yes, WINDS OF WINTER Yes yes,” Martin wrote to his fans at the end of the year. He didn’t forget it.
Indeed, it appears that George R.R. Martin is keen to finally finish the sixth book, which the fans have been eagerly awaiting. In January 2023, he wrote on his blog that he was very busy with Westeros at the moment, and during an appearance on Stephen Colbert’s show he said he was still about 400 to 500 pages short. The manuscript currently consists of 1,100 to 1,200 pages.
Martin has already confirmed various supporting characters and storylines for the penultimate book in the series, and there are already several reading samples on the Internet. After numerous release dates, which he was unable to meet, the internationally renowned author has decided not to give a release date anymore. “Game of Thrones” fans are rumored online about a book release in 2024.
So far there is very little or no information about the seventh and final volume of the “Game of Thrones” saga. The book originally had the working title “A Time For Wolves”. In May 2019, Martin explained in a statement on his blog that he hadn’t even started on the seventh and final book. “I’m not going to start writing number seven until I’ve finished number six,” he said at the time in response to rumors he had held back from publishing the books because of the series for HBO’s sake.
The world-famous series “Game of Thrones”, based on Martin’s books, was broadcast in the period from 2011 to 2019. From the sixth season, the series had largely overtaken the hitherto incomplete book series in terms of plot. George R.R. Martin’s previously published books of the saga appeared in the period from 1996 to 2011. Since then, the world has been waiting for the announced last two volumes.
As I said, die-hard fans will probably have to be satisfied with new series material instead of new reading material. The new spin-off, which is now set to appear as a series, is called “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight”. The new episodes from the “Game of Thrones” universe revolve around the adventures of Dunk – also known as Ser Duncan the Great – and his squire Egg – the future King Aegon of Targaryen.
The new series is based on three short stories by George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg series, published between 1998 and 2010. In 2015, the three novellas The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight were merged into one book called “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”.
