Sarah Ferguson doesn’t belong in the category of women who like to mince words. Last week, it was leaked that Prince Andrew’s ex-wife did not receive an invitation to the coronation of her former brother-in-law, Charles III, on May 6th. Although almost two decades after the divorce, Fergie is still walking in and out of royalty.
Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson were married from 1986 to 1996. From this marriage the two daughters Beatrice and Eugenie emerged. To this day, the former couple maintains a friendly relationship. They are to live as a shared flat in the Royal Lodge on the Windsor Castle estate. Fergie has always been an important pillar in Andrew’s life, and not just because of their children. His ex-wife stood by him when the son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip was accused of molesting a minor and was able to settle the case out of court. Still, a scandal in the royal family that cost Andrew his status as an active royal.
Despite the close family ties, Fergie is not scheduled to be a guest at the official coronation ceremony. The 63-year-old confirmed this personally in an interview with the moderators Kate Garraway and Adil Ray on the show “Good Morning Britain”. From their statements, however, a hidden criticism of Prince Harry and Meghan’s behavior towards the royal family can also be guessed at.
“I’m not going, it’s a state event and I’m divorced. I don’t think you can have it both ways,” Andrews said. She also adds that there will be a private celebration that she will attend: “I won’t be there for the state ceremony, but I can be there privately, and it’s a nice feeling to be there, it really is . And like I said, you can’t have both, you can’t sit on the fence, you’re either in or out, don’t fool around.”
Whether this sentence is a hidden criticism of Prince Harry and his wife Meghan’s back and forth remains open, but it is obvious. Prince Harry is said to attend the coronation at his father’s request, but without his family, despite officially resigning as a working royal three years ago.
For King Charles III. and his wife Camilla, Fergie finds warm words in the interview. “You have done an extraordinary job of uniting the family,” she says. She also talks about her ex-husband and friend Prince Andrew and wishes that he “takes leave of the limelight to get on with his life” and emphasizes that he is “a good man and grandfather” for their grandchildren.
