An era comes to an end. On April 27, CBS will air the final episode of the hit format “Carpool Karaoke” with host James Corden. For the last episode, the broadcaster came up with something very special. Superstar and Corden’s best friend, Adele, surprised him at his house while he was still asleep and together they set off on the final drive a little later. This time Corden had to be in the passenger seat and Adele drove.
An emotional (rollercoaster) ride for the duo, because they talked about elementary cuts in their lives. James Corden confessed that he had doubts about the “carpool karaoke” format at first. No celebrity agreed until Mariah Carey did – and so a new hit format was born, in which almost every A-lister in Hollywood, especially from the music industry, took part from 2015 to 2023.
During the drive, the singer’s big hits ran over the loudspeakers, to which both sang along at the top of their lungs. The song “I Drink Wine” got very emotional for James Corden and Adele. The singer also explained that the song was “very important” for both of them. The song itself was inspired by James, his wife Julia and their children Carey, Charlotte and Max vacationing together. Adele accompanied the family with her son Angelo.
She recalled, “It was the first year that I felt like I was responsible for being an adult, as I left Simon and stuff the year before that.” The singer had been with Simon Konecki since 2011, separated in 2019 and the divorce was finalized in 2021. Their son was born in 2012.
With tears in her eyes, she thanked Corden for the support he had given her during this difficult time: “You and Jules and the children took so much care of me and Angelo. And you did it with humor too, you always said, ‘Good luck with that!’ in everything I pursued”. Corden was also touched by so much friendly love, grabbed her arm and the 34-year-old added: “You have always been a mentor to me. You have always given me advice, since I was 21, you were there for me”.
Corden also connects a very emotional story with the song. Adele recalled a 2020 car ride the two of them had when she realized something was wrong with James Corden. Adele sang the feelings that Corden described to her that day in the studio weeks later. She sent him the recordings and the presenter found himself and his emotions reflected in Adele’s lines. He described the situation: “I was blown away by how you managed to put everything I felt about myself and life into one verse.”
