The resigned Queen Margrethe II has been awarded the prize for the best costumes at the “Danish Oscars”. The 83-year-old received the “Robert” for her participation in the Nextflix film “Ehrengard: The Story of a Seduction,” as the Danish Film Academy announced on Saturday evening in Copenhagen.
The mother of the new King Frederik X was also nominated in the scenography category. The film by Danish director Bille August (75) is based on a novel by the Danish writer Karen Blixen (1885-1962).
The Queen surprisingly announced her resignation in her New Year’s speech in 2024 and handed over the throne to her son in mid-January.
A queen with an artistic streak
Margrethe designed the costumes for the main actors Sidse Babett Knudsen and Mikkel Boe Følsgaard. The Danish monarch also made around 70 decoupages for the scenography. According to the Danish royal family, Margrethe has been working with this technique for many years, in which paper cutouts – for example from magazines or books – are combined to create new motifs. Since the 1970s she has been painting watercolors, drawing, and designing sets and costumes for the Royal Theater and Copenhagen’s Tivoli theme park.
The long-time monarch did not appear in person at the awards ceremony in the Danish capital. Producer Marcella Dichmann accepted the award on her behalf, as the newspaper “Berlingske” reported.
Dichmann said she regrets that the organizers did not inform Margrethe in advance about the price to enable her participation. The head of the film academy, Jacob Neiiendam, emphasized that all nominees would be treated equally. “Nobody knows in advance whether they will receive an award,” said Neiiendam.
“The Bastard” is the winner of the evening
The film “The Bastard” with Mads Mikkelsen won the most prizes with seven “Roberts”. These included the awards for best film and best male actor. The 58-year-old had already been awarded the European Film Prize for Best Actor for his role.
