“Avatar: The Way of Water” continues to be successful in cinemas, but James Cameron (68) is already whetting the appetite for part 3. On the sidelines of the Critics Choice Awards, where “Avatar 2” was nominated for best film, among other things, he gave director for the magazine “Deadline” a short interview about the successor.
According to Cameron, fans will get to know two new cultures of the Na’vi in ”Avatar 3″ – after the Omatikaya in part 1 and the Metkayina in the sequel. Cameron is not yet revealing the names of the two new tribes.
One of the new cultures will be associated with the element of fire. According to Cameron, fire should generally play an important symbolic role in the next film. As the title suggests, the element water played a major role in “Avatar: The Way of Water”. In the opening of the “Avatar” series from 2009, the Omatikaya are more down to earth.
In a previous interview, James Cameron had already spoken of the fire culture in December 2022. He referred to them as the “ash people”. He also hinted that in “Avatar 3” the Na’vi show themselves from a worse side. In the first two films, they were more of a positive counter-image to the evil people who want to colonize Pandora.
Part 3 will also “move a little more freely in the world of Pandora”, as the filmmaker “Deadline” further reveals. The plot will lead to several different locations on the moon.
The still unnamed third part has already been shot, it was created parallel to “Avatar: The Way of Water”. It is slated to hit theaters on December 18, 2024.
