They have been on stage together for almost 50 years and inspire the world of folk music with memorable songs – now they are thinking about the end of their career for the first time: the folk music duo Marianne and Michael announced in the latest edition of the “NDR Talkshow” that they would soon to want to withdraw from the public.
“Next year we want to do a few nice TV shows for our 50th stage anniversary and then say goodbye,” said Marianne to the moderator Hubertus Meyer-Burckhardt. Saying goodbye is not difficult for the couple, as Michael adds to his wife’s explanations: “I’ve been on stage for 62 years now, almost 50 of them with my wife. It’s enough for me!”
The announcement of the well-known Schlager couple is hardly surprising given the recent events: Michael suffered a stroke at the beginning of the year. In conversation with Meyer-Burckhardt, the folk musician remembers: “We were in Tyrol in our holiday home, and that’s when we saw Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.” To help the people, they organized an aid transport – but then the stroke intervened.
This was followed by five days of artificial coma, movement restrictions and rehabilitation, which is still ongoing. Michael is also convinced that he has not yet reached the end of the road: “I also believe that this will not stop in the next few years, because you simply have the feeling that you are still missing something in terms of physical well-being.” The corona infection that overtook both pop singers during this year’s Oktoberfest was only the tip of the iceberg.
After almost 50 years on stage together, Marianne and Michael can already look back on numerous unforgettable moments. Your fans will probably remember hits like “When will music finally start” or “Heyo, Heyo Hüttenzauber”. Anyone who would like to see the two folk music stars live on stage again will have the opportunity to do so in the next few weeks: they will be on tour one last time with “Christmas with Marianne and Michael”.
