The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has recently issued a tender worth a whopping Rs 456 crore for the design and construction of a 7.3km viaduct along the upcoming Lajpat Nagar-Saket G Block corridor. This corridor serves as an extension of the Golden Line and will greatly enhance connectivity in South Delhi, linking it to the upcoming Tughlaqabad-Aerocity corridor.
Connecting South Delhi: A Vital Infrastructure Project
The Lajpat Nagar-Saket G Block corridor will consist of eight stations, with the tender specifically focusing on platform construction for seven of these stations. The eighth station, Saket G Block, is currently in the works as part of phase IV and will serve as an interchange facility, further improving connectivity in the area. The completion of this corridor is crucial for enhancing transportation options and easing congestion in the bustling South Delhi region.
Enhanced Connectivity and Urban Travel Experience
This corridor will pass through key areas such as Lajpat Nagar, Andrews Ganj, GK-I, Chirag Dilli, Pushpa Bhawan, Saket Court, Pushpa Vihar, and Saket G Block. Despite its relatively short length of 7km, the corridor will feature three interchange stations at Saket G Block (connecting to the Golden Line), Chirag Dilli (connecting to the Magenta Line), and Lajpat Nagar (connecting to the Violet and Pink Lines). Lajpat Nagar will also become South Delhi’s first triple interchange facility, offering a significant convenience for commuters and businesses in the vicinity.
As the second smallest corridor in the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s network, the Lajpat Nagar-Saket G Block stretch will introduce India’s first three-coach train corridor. This innovative approach aims to provide a more comfortable and efficient urban travel experience for passengers navigating short distances in the bustling city of Delhi. The implementation of this three-coach train system reflects the DMRC’s commitment to improving public transportation infrastructure and meeting the evolving needs of Delhi’s residents.
The construction of the Lajpat Nagar-Saket G Block corridor is set to be completed within 36 months of the tender being awarded to a suitable party. This ambitious timeline underscores the urgency and importance of this infrastructure project in enhancing connectivity, reducing travel times, and promoting sustainable urban development in South Delhi. As the project progresses, residents and commuters can look forward to a more seamless and convenient travel experience in the bustling metropolis of Delhi.
