supreme-court-to-hear-challenges-to-waqf-amendment-act

So, like, the Supreme Court is gonna hear a bunch of pleas on Monday (May 5, 2025) that challenge the whole Waqf (Amendment) Act’s constitutionality, which sounds like a big deal, right? The government had put a pause on a couple of major aspects of the law ’cause the top court was all up in their business with a bunch of questions. The Centre was all like, “Hey, we promise not to mess with any waqf properties or make any new appointments till May 5,” when they talked to Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and some other Justices on April 17. They were all about how the law was passed by Parliament after a lot of thinking, so it shouldn’t just be stopped without giving them a chance to explain themselves.

The Centre was all, “No way, Jose” when the Supreme Court suggested stopping the denotification of Waqf properties and including non-Muslims in the Central Waqf Council and boards. The court was like, “Fine, we won’t mess with any waqf properties until the next hearing,” and gave the Centre a week to get their act together and respond to all the pleas by May 5. So, now there’s this three-judge bench getting ready to listen to five petitions about the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, including one from the AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asadudding Owaisi.

The government was all defensive in their affidavit on April 25, saying how the new Act was totally cool and that the court shouldn’t just shut it down without giving it a chance. They were all about how the law respected Muslim practices and how it actually stopped some shady stuff with waqf properties. They were like, “Guys, we’ve had a crazy increase in waqf land since 2013, so we must be doing something right.”

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board wasn’t having any of it, though. They accused the government of giving the court some bogus info and wanted someone to pay for it. They were not happy about the government’s claims of a “shocking increase” in waqf properties after 2013. The court was like, “No more new pleas, please,” ’cause they were already swamped with over 70 litigants. The government finally got the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 approved last month, and now everyone and their mom is challenging it in court.

So, yeah, it’s gonna be a big day on May 5 when the Supreme Court tackles all these pleas about the Waqf (Amendment) Act. Let’s see how it all plays out, right? Not really sure why this matters, but hey, that’s the news for you.
