six-lane-flyover-fix-pwd-targets-civil-lines-gridlock

The Public Works Department in New Delhi has set its sights on addressing the traffic congestion nightmare at the Civil Lines Trauma Centre and DRDO in north Delhi. This ambitious project involves the construction of a six-lane flyover near the Civil Lines-Metcalf House T-junction, aimed at improving traffic flow towards Vidhan Sabha at a cost of Rs 183 crore.

Addressing a Long-standing Traffic Woe

For years, the area near the Metcalf House T-junction has been plagued by severe traffic congestion, causing frustration for local residents, market associations, and commuters passing through the region. The relentless gridlock, with long queues of vehicles snaking towards Salimgarh Fort and Signature Bridge, has prompted the Public Works Department to take decisive action.

PWD officials highlighted the pressing need for a solution due to the bottleneck created by the T-junction, resulting from traffic merging from multiple directions and lengthy wait times at traffic lights. After a meticulous evaluation, it was determined that the most effective remedy was the construction of a new flyover spanning 680 meters. This strategic move aims to streamline traffic flow, eliminate signalized intersections, and widen existing roads to accommodate the growing vehicular movement in the area.

Enhancing Mobility and Safety

The proposed flyover project also prioritizes the safety and convenience of pedestrians, with the inclusion of safe walkways on either side of the structure. U-turns will be strategically placed to facilitate local traffic and minimize the need for lengthy detours. Additionally, proper drainage systems will be installed to prevent waterlogging, ensuring smooth passage for vehicles even during inclement weather.

PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh emphasized the significance of this endeavor in transforming Delhi’s road infrastructure into a modern, efficient, and commuter-friendly network. The overarching goal is to enhance travel time, reduce congestion on vital roads, and enhance mobility across the city. This initiative aligns with the government’s vision of creating a more accessible and seamless transportation system for residents and visitors alike.

As the second major flyover project initiated by PWD since the BJP came into power, this endeavor reflects a commitment to alleviating traffic woes across the capital. Building on the success of the first flyover near Savitri Cinema, PWD is determined to revive the long-pending project to ease congestion along key routes leading to Nehru Place, Okhla, and beyond. With several clearances already secured, the construction of the flyover is set to kick off in the near future.

In addition to the flyover projects, PWD is also gearing up to tackle congestion at two of the busiest intersections in Delhi—Peeragarhi Chowk in west Delhi and Andheria Mor in south Delhi. These underpass constructions aim to decongest traffic flow, particularly at critical junctures like Peeragarhi Chowk, a major bottleneck on the Outer Ring Road connecting north Delhi, west Delhi, and Bahadurgarh in Haryana. Similarly, Andheria Mor plays a crucial role in facilitating traffic heading towards Gurgaon, Qutub Minar, and the Indira Gandhi International Airport, making it a high-priority area for infrastructural improvements.
