In a recent development in Delhi, Mayor Mahesh Kumar has taken a firm stance against the proposed user charges for solid waste management. The Mayor penned a letter addressed to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, outlining his opposition to the imposition of these charges. The crux of the matter lies in the necessity for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to first establish an efficient door-to-door waste collection system before levying such fees.
Mayor’s Opposition Sparks Controversy
The Mayor’s letter has sparked a heated debate, drawing contrasting viewpoints from different political factions. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), currently in opposition in the MCD, has accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of pushing for these charges deliberately. According to Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor, a similar proposal was put forward in 2021 by the corporation’s former commissioner. However, it was shelved by the then BJP mayor. The BJP alleges that the current AAP Mayor, Mahesh Kumar, is merely making statements without taking any concrete action.
On the other hand, Mayor Mahesh Kumar contends that the proposal to introduce user charges in conjunction with house tax was never formally approved by the MCD. In a post on social media platform ‘X’, he clarified that the proposal was never brought before the House for discussion. Instead, it was allegedly implemented without proper authorization by municipal commissioner Ashwani Kumar.
