A significant development is on the horizon for New Delhi’s primary healthcare system as the city gears up to welcome the establishment of 1,139 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAM) as part of the ambitious Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM). This initiative, introduced on October 25, 2021, aims to revitalize the existing public health infrastructure across the country, ensuring its readiness to effectively tackle future health crises and disease outbreaks.
The PM-ABHIM, operating as a centrally sponsored scheme, is a nationwide program that seeks to bolster healthcare facilities nationwide. With a total project cost of Rs 2,406 crore, the mission will also see the introduction of 9 critical care blocks and 11 integrated public health laboratories, further enhancing the city’s healthcare landscape.
During a recent event, the Delhi and Union governments signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to kick off this transformative project, coinciding with the rollout of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY). As part of this momentous occasion, 30 beneficiaries were ceremoniously presented with PM-JAY cards, symbolizing the beginning of a new era in healthcare accessibility and affordability for eligible Delhi residents.
The chosen beneficiaries represent a diverse cross-section of the Union territory’s population, spanning various social and economic demographics. With the distribution of Ayushman cards, families can now avail themselves of Rs 5 lakh in annual health insurance through PMJAY, complemented by an additional Rs 5 lakh coverage provided by the Delhi government, totaling Rs 10 lakh in yearly insurance benefits.
The forthcoming Ayushman Arogya Mandirs will offer a comprehensive array of services across 12 distinct packages, catering to critical areas such as mother and child care, vaccination, mental health services, elderly care, and treatment for communicable diseases. These facilities are poised to play a pivotal role in strengthening the city’s healthcare infrastructure and fostering a healthier populace.
Enhancing Healthcare Capabilities Through Innovative Solutions
Integral to the PM-ABHIM initiative are the integrated public health laboratories that are slated to offer in-house testing facilities, ensuring prompt and accurate diagnostic services for patients. Moreover, the critical care blocks are set to bolster Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Operating Theater (OT) capabilities in major hospitals and medical colleges, further fortifying the city’s healthcare readiness.
Health officials have confirmed that the first integrated public health laboratory will be established at the Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital in Tahirpur, with plans in place for additional facilities at key locations such as the Indira Gandhi Hospital in Dwarka. The selection process for other sites earmarked for these crucial facilities is currently underway, underscoring the meticulous planning and execution involved in this expansive healthcare project.
A preliminary list comprising 80 healthcare facilities under the purview of the Delhi government has been identified for transformation into Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, pending final approvals. Among these establishments are existing mohalla clinics and Delhi government dispensaries set to undergo a comprehensive makeover to align with the AAM model, showcasing a commitment to revitalizing healthcare access at the grassroots level.
Empowering Communities Through Proactive Healthcare Initiatives
Reflecting on the significance of this transformative healthcare endeavor, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized the Union government’s unwavering commitment to prioritizing public health. With a focus on enhancing health infrastructure, promoting access to quality and affordable medication, and advocating for holistic health practices like nutrition, yoga, and meditation, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision underscores the paramount importance placed on the well-being of the nation’s citizens.
As Delhi prepares to embark on this groundbreaking healthcare mission, the imminent launch of Ayushman Arogya Mandirs and associated healthcare facilities signals a new chapter in the city’s healthcare narrative. By embracing innovation, inclusivity, and a steadfast dedication to public health, the PM-ABHIM initiative is poised to drive tangible improvements in healthcare accessibility and quality for residents across the capital city.
