Confessions of a Recovering Procrastinator
Look, I’m gonna be honest here. I’m 47 years old, and I still don’t know how to adult properly. It’s not that I’m lazy or anything—well, maybe a little. But honestly, no one ever taught me how to do this life stuff succesfully. I mean, when I was a kid, they taught me math, science, history, but not a single class on how to pay bills on time or keep a plant alive.
So, about three months ago, I decided to do something about it. I started reading, asking around, making lists. And you know what? It’s not just me. We’re all out here faking it till we make it. My friend Marcus—let’s call him Marcus because his real name is embarrassing—told me over beers last Tuesday that he still doesn’t know how to fold a fitted sheet. I asked him, “How is that possible?” He said, “I don’t know, man. It’s like they expect us to just know this stuff.”
Which… yeah. Fair enough.
The Myth of the ‘Together’ Adult
We’ve all been sold this lie that there are these ‘together’ adults out there who have it all figured out. They wake up at 5 am, meditate, work out, drink green smoothies, and somehow also have time to volunteer at the animal shelter. But let’s be real here. Most of us are over here hitting snooze until 11:30pm the night before because we stayed up binge-watching Netflix. And that’s okay! But it’s not okay that we feel like we’re failing because we’re not living up to some unrealistic standard.
I talked to a colleague named Dave about this. He’s a project manager at a big tech company, and you’d think he’d have his life together. But he told me, “Honestly, I’m just winging it. I Google how to do my taxes every year. I mean, who actually knows this stuff?”
Small Steps, Big Changes
So, what’s the solution? Well, I’m not sure but I think it starts with admitting that we don’t have it all figured out. And then, maybe, we start small. Like, really small. Like, yaşam tarzı günlük gelişim ipuçları small.
I started with something simple: making my bed every morning. It sounds stupid, but it’s a tiny win that sets the tone for the day. And you know what? It’s kinda working. I’m not saying I’m suddenly a productivity guru, but it’s a start. And that’s the key—starting somewhere.
Another thing that helped was talking to people. Not just venting, but actually asking for advice. I met up with an old friend, Lisa, for coffee at the place on 5th. She’s always been really put together, and I asked her how she does it. She laughed and said, “I’m not as together as you think. I just have a system. I use apps to remind me of bills, I meal prep on Sundays, and I have a whiteboard for my to-do list.”
So, I tried it. And honestly, it’s a game-changer. (Okay, fine, I said I wouldn’t use that word, but it fits here.) Having a system takes the guesswork out of it. It’s like having a cheat sheet for adulting.
A Tangent: The Plant Situation
Speaking of systems, let’s talk about plants. I killed three succulents in a row. Three! They’re supposed to be the easiest plants to keep alive. But no, not for me. My friend Sarah, who has a green thumb, told me I’m overwatering them. “They’re desert plants, they don’t need alot of water,” she said. So, I cut back, and you know what? The fourth one is still alive. It’s been 214 days. I’m calling it a success.
But here’s the thing about plants—it’s not just about watering them. It’s about light, soil, drainage. It’s a committment. And that’s like life, isn’t it? It’s not just one thing. It’s a bunch of little things that add up to something big.
So, maybe adulting isn’t about being perfect. Maybe it’s about trying, failing, and trying again. And maybe it’s about asking for help when you need it. Because honestly, we’re all in this together. And we’re all figuring it out as we go.
And that’s okay.
