I’m a failure. At least, that’s what I felt like every January 1st for the past decade.
See, I’d make these grand committments to myself—lose 20 pounds, write a novel, learn Spanish, blah blah blah. And by February? I’d be back to my old habits, feeling like a complete fraud. Then, about three months ago, I had coffee with an old friend, let’s call him Marcus. He said something that changed everything.
“You’re approaching this all wrong,” he told me, stirring his latte like he was stirring up trouble. “It’s not about these big, scary goals. It’s about tiny, daily wins.”
Which… yeah. Fair enough.
But here’s the thing about tiny wins—they’re kinda boring to talk about.
I mean, who’s gonna be impressed if I say, “I drank 64 ounces of water today”? But you know what? That’s exactly the kinda thing that lifestyle tips daily improvement are made of. And honestly, I’m over impressing people. I just wanna feel better, you know?
So last Tuesday, I started tracking my water intake. And my steps. And my sleep. And yeah, it’s nerdy. But it’s also working. I feel better than I have in years. And that’s not nothing.
Now, don’t get me wrong—I’m not saying you should start tracking every little thing you do.
I tried that once. Back in 2018, I read some book about “quantified self” or whatever, and I went full nerd for about 214 days. Tracked my calories, my workouts, my mood, my poops—you name it, I tracked it. And you know what? It was completley exhausting. I quit cold turkey and didn’t look back.
But here’s the difference now: I’m not tracking everything. Just the stuff that matters to me. The stuff that makes me feel good. And that’s the key, I think. It’s gotta be about you, not some arbitrary list of “shoulds”.
Let me tell you about my friend Dave.
A colleague named Dave used to be a smoker. Like, a pack a day, coughing up a lung kinda smoker. Then one day, he just… stopped. No patches, no gum, no therapy. He just decided he was done. And he was. That was it.
I asked him about it once, over lunch at that place on 5th. “How’d you do it?” I asked. He looked at me like I was crazy. “I just did,” he said. “I didn’t want to be a smoker anymore, so I wasn’t.”
And I get that. Sometimes, it’s that simple. But for the rest of us mere mortals? It’s a little more compliccated.
So here’s what I’m gonna do instead of New Year’s resolutions this year.
I’m gonna focus on tiny, daily wins. I’m gonna drink my water. I’m gonna move my body. I’m gonna sleep enough. And I’m gonna be okay with the fact that some days, I won’t. And that’s okay. Because progress isn’t linear, you know? It’s messy and it’s slow and it’s full of ammendments.
And hey, if you wanna join me? Great. Let’s do it together. But if not? That’s cool too. This is about you, not me. It’s about feeling better, not being better.
So here’s to the tiny wins. Here’s to the messy progress. Here’s to feeling better, one small step at a time.
