“Citadel” pushes the boundaries of entertainment. At least it’s an attempt by the Russo brothers Anthony (53) and Joe (51) together with showrunner David Weil and the main actors Priyanka Chopra Jonas (40), Richard Madden (36) and Stanley Tucci (62). The result is a global series project that can be seen on Amazon Prime Video from April 28th. But what makes the secret agent series “Citadel” so special?

In an interview with the news agency spot on news, Priyanka Chopra Jonas reveals how she prepared for her role as Nadia Sinh and talks about the importance of entertainment globalization. Meanwhile, David Weil looks back on the exciting filming and praises his colleagues who will be instrumental in the success of “Citadel.”

Priyanka Chopra Jonas: Nadia is a very special and unique character. She’s not really “normal” as far as the secret agent genre goes. In this genre specifically, I can’t recall many shows where the lead role is female. Angelina Jolie, Charlize Theron and Geena Davis come to mind. “Citadel” had the concept of a secret agent duo from the start. This is very interesting. When I was preparing for Nadia, I wanted her to have realistic features. I wanted her to bleed, to hurt her – I wanted her to feel things, to be vulnerable. Working with David and the Russo brothers was a collaborative effort. Emotionally, I knew how her journey was going because we worked on it together.

We also trained physically for a year and a half. It was very athletic, you always had to be in top form. I’ve had weapons training, combat training, whatever it takes to look convincing. It was difficult filming, but by the end it felt like we accomplished a lot.

David Weil: The show itself is really difficult and it’s a global story. Storytelling is very complex. Priyanka, Richard and the Russo brothers wanted to do something groundbreaking with this series. The Russos like to push boundaries when it comes to storytelling, scope and setting. But that was the incredible fun of it. It was a wonderful canvas to let off steam on.

Every day was a challenge. But as Priyanka said, we had so much prep time, we were able to deep dive into the story, and Priyanka and Richard as titular characters really paved the way and inspired the entire cast. It really was a dream, great luck.

Chopra Jonas: I think fashion is a state of mind. I don’t think too much about what I want to wear every day. It’s about expressing yourself with it. When you open your closet, you may want to wear sneakers and a comfortable outfit. But try to be a bit adventurous with your style. Expressing yourself with fashion is the most important thing, more important than following trends. Make your own trends!

Chopra Jonas: I’m particularly proud that “Citadel” works against the boundaries of entertainment. The series shows us a new way to tell stories. Nobody has tried that before on television or in the cinema. By that I mean it’s a truly “global” series. Citadel as an organization is not loyal to any nation. Citadel is only loyal to humanity. There are Citadel agents around the world working with each other. We already have an Indian version of the series, an Italian version and ours. All are connected when it comes to the story. “Citadel” has built on a global network of artists, actors, directors, writers and filmmakers from different countries. That makes me so proud.

As someone who has worked in the Hindi entertainment industry, I really wanted our films to reach people outside of our community. I’m so thankful for the globalization of entertainment that our series is pioneering.

Chopra Jonas: I love traveling (laughs). I love everything about travel and I love it everywhere. I don’t have a favorite travel destination. Getting on a plane, landing somewhere, going to a hotel, apartment or vacation home, finding restaurants, exploring the local food and culture – I just love the concept of discovery. Traveling satisfies my curiosity.

Because: I would love to travel to Tokyo. Priyanka told me a lot about it. We’ll look at a city map and decide together what we want to do when we go there (laughs).
