gua-2025-contest-enter-now-for-growing-up-n-america

For three decades, AACI’s Growing Up in America – GUA has been a beacon for young Americans seeking to celebrate their identity and share their thoughts through artistic expression. Formerly known as Growing Up Asian in America, this contest has provided a platform for K-12th grade students across the Bay Area to showcase their creativity, culture, and community spirit. As we commemorate the 30th anniversary of this esteemed competition, we reflect on the enduring legacy of empowering young voices and nurturing self-expression.

Partnering with NBC Bay Area, GUA offers students a distinctive opportunity to express their stories, ideas, and perspectives through various mediums such as art, writing, and video. Over the years, this contest has inspired countless students to delve into and honor their cultural heritage while engaging with civic issues. It’s a celebration of diversity, resilience, and growth.

Participants in the GUA contest must reside or attend school in one of the following Bay Area counties: Santa Clara, San Francisco, Contra Costa, Marin, Sonoma, Solano, Napa, Alameda, or San Mateo County. The theme for this year’s competition is “Facing My Fears,” challenging contestants to explore the concept of fear, differentiate between healthy and unhealthy fears, and develop strategies for fear management.

Fear is a universal emotion that touches us all at some point in our lives. It can serve as a protective instinct, keeping us safe in perilous situations, or it can hinder our progress and personal growth. Healthy fears guide us, while unhealthy fears impede us. Managing fear involves staying calm, seeking support, and taking small steps towards courage and strength. This year’s theme aims to deepen participants’ understanding of fear and equip them with tools to confront and conquer their fears.

The GUA contest will be accepting submissions from March 1st to March 15th, with winners announced in May. To learn more about the contest or to submit your entry, visit www.aaci.org/gua or reach out to development@aaci.org for additional information.
