The Prime Minister of Lower Saxony, Stephan Weil, has called for the expansion of the energy networks to be financed with tax money. “When it comes to energy networks, we are talking about a crucial part of public infrastructure,” the SPD politician told the newspapers of the Bavaria media group. The current financing through a levy on consumers is counterproductive in the long term and also harms the industrial location.

“I am aware that this is a huge issue. We are talking about many billions of euros. But we have to get to it if we want to reverse the trend,” said the head of government. Weil, in whose state a lot of electricity is generated from wind, referred to roads and rails. In the end, these too would be financed by taxpayers and not just by those who use them.
