According to the police in Saxony, there has been no major traffic chaos due to the winter weather with slippery conditions, rain and snowfall. “The severe weather warning seems to have reached the population. It is surprisingly quiet,” said a police spokesman on Wednesday evening when asked. With a few isolated exceptions, there were no weather-related incidents in the early evening.

On Wednesday afternoon, the German Weather Service (DWD) warned of snowfall and black ice. Districts and municipalities asked citizens to stay indoors if possible in these weather conditions and to avoid non-essential trips.

However, it wasn’t completely uneventful. According to Mittelsächsische Flughafen AG, almost all flights from Frankfurt am Main and Munich have been canceled at Leipzig/Halle and Dresden airports due to the weather conditions there. More than ten connections were affected by the outages on Wednesday.

In Dresden there was a traffic accident with two people injured due to black ice. According to police, one driver was taken to hospital and the driver of the other car involved received outpatient treatment on site. The exact course of the accident is still unclear; a parked car was also reportedly damaged. Münchner Straße towards the city center was closed to record the accident.

According to the DWD, it will initially snow, especially in northern Saxony. In Central Saxony, temperatures are around freezing point, which is why rainfall there could freeze. Freezing rain also falls in high altitudes. According to the information, around five to ten centimeters of fresh snow will fall in the evening – in the Erzgebirge the DWD expects fifteen centimeters. The snowfall is expected to continue here until Friday evening.

It will finally snow across Saxony on Thursday morning. The sun appears throughout the day in the Leipzig area. Snowfall will continue into the afternoon. In the late afternoon the snow clouds will move further to the southeast – the clouds will loosen up. The temperatures still remain cold in winter with daytime temperatures of minus one to plus one degree – in the mountains minus four to minus one degree.

Friday night will remain mostly dry at minus four to minus six degrees, in the mountains up to minus eight degrees. Friday itself will also remain free of precipitation. Temperatures reach minus two to plus one degrees, in the mountains minus five to minus one degrees.
