A helper was injured during a Nandu capture operation in the Strasburg region (West Pomerania-Greifswald). As the head of the Storchenhof Papendorf, Jens Krüger, said on Monday, the ratite had appeared on the B104 not far from the lake in Strasburg on Sunday night. The alarmed animal rescuers and the police were able to blind the nandu with lamps in the dark and throw blankets over his head. However, one of the animal rescuers was injured by the animal’s claws.
“These birds are very defensive,” said Krüger. The Nandu is now in an enclosure at the Storchenhof near Pasewalk, where the owners are supposed to pick it up. Krüger suspects that the big bird escaped from one of the many private holdings around Strasburg. The small town belongs to MV and is surrounded by villages from the Uckermark Brandenburg. The Neubrandenburg “Nordkurier” had previously reported about it.
There is already experience with such ratites in the region. In Krugsdorf near Pasewalk, emus are kept, from which animals keep getting out into the open. There, fleeing animals have often been reported by drivers and had to be caught.
