They went ahead and filed a habeas petition, basically asking a judge to set him free ASAP. And honestly, I don’t blame them. This whole situation sounds like a hot mess.
This dude, Edicson David Quintero Chacon, got picked up during a check-in with Immigration and Customs Enforcement in North Carolina back in June 2024. Next thing he knows, he’s sitting in a detention center in Georgia. And then, boom, he’s being told he’s getting shipped back to Venezuela.
But here’s the kicker – instead of sending him back to his homeland, they send him to El Salvador. Like, what the heck? And get this, his lawyers are saying that the U.S. government is basically funding his “torture” down there. Talk about a violation of rights.
Now, this poor guy is stuck in detention, approaching a whole year behind bars. No charges, no convictions, nada. He’s just a regular dude – a husband, a dad, a brother, a son. A guy who knows his way around some tools and a fishing rod.
The government’s decision to keep him locked up in El Salvador could basically be a life sentence for him. And that’s not right. The Supreme Court had some say in the matter, but it’s still a messy situation.
The ACLU is planning to jump in and help out with more legal stuff for all the other guys who got deported alongside Quintero. Let’s hope they can make a difference and get these guys some justice.
