The U.S. and Ukraine just went ahead and signed this deal to create the United States-Ukraine Reconstruction Investment Fund, and honestly, it’s been a long time coming. The deal gives the U.S. some rights to Ukrainian rare earth minerals, and both sides were super excited to announce this on Wednesday. Like, they couldn’t wait to spill the beans, you know?
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was all like, “This agreement, like, sends a clear message to Russia that the Trump Administration is all about that peace process vibe, focusing on a free, sovereign, and prosperous Ukraine in the long run.” He was really pumped about it. And President Trump? He was totally envisioning this partnership between the American people and the Ukrainian people to show how committed they are to peace and prosperity in Ukraine. And just to be crystal clear, they’re not letting anyone who helped out the Russian war machine get in on this Ukraine reconstruction action. Nope, not happening.
The Ukrainian Minister of the Economy, Yulia Svyrydenko, was also stoked about it. She posted on X about how they’re teaming up with the United States to create this Fund that’s gonna bring in all kinds of global investment into their country. It’s like a big party, but with money instead of balloons and cake.
In a video where he spilled the tea on the deal, Bessent gave us all the deets. He was like, “This partnership is gonna let the United States invest alongside Ukraine to unlock all of Ukraine’s growth assets. They’re gonna bring in American talent, capital, and all those fancy governance standards that will make Ukraine’s investment climate better and help speed up their economic recovery.” Sounds pretty cool, right?
So, both sides were all set to sign the agreement on critical minerals and other resources a while back, but the U.S. was like, “Hold up, we want both the main minerals resources agreement and the creation of the investment fund document signed at the same time.” Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal and a source in the Ukrainian president’s office spilled the beans on that. It was like a little hiccup in the plan, you know?
And then, they were all ready to sign, but Ukraine was like, “Wait a minute, we wanted to sign these on different days, not together.” But the U.S. was like, “Nah, we want it all done at once.” So there was a little bit of back and forth, a little bit of drama, but they eventually got it all sorted out. Not really sure why this matters, but hey, it’s news, right?
Trump and the Ukrainian President were supposed to sign this minerals deal back in February, but things got a bit messy after they had a bit of a tiff in the Oval Office. But now, it looks like they’re back on track and ready to make things official. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like this is gonna be a pretty big deal for both countries.
