Like every May 16, the fans of Talavera de la Reina have paid tribute this Monday to Joselito ‘El Gallo’, the king of bullfighters who fell mortally wounded in the ‘La Caprichosa’ arena in 1920.
A mass was celebrated in the Basílica Nuestra Señora del Prado, a concert by the music band and a poetry recital by the ‘Joaquín Benito de Lucas’ School of Theater and Cinema, in addition to the traditional floral offering before the bust with which the figure of the bullfighter in front of the bullring is remembered.
The tribute is organized by the Talaverano Bullfighting Club, chaired by Félix Mayoral, and the councilors Daniel Tito and Carlos Gil have attended.
The death of Joselito ‘El Gallo’ had a strong impact at the time and, unfortunately, placed the name of Talavera de la Reina in the tragic history of bullfighting. Since then, every May 16, a minute of silence is observed in any bullfighting festival to honor his memory.
