The Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) has ratified the application of 25 percent of Spanish in the Canet de Mar school (Barcelona), by not attending to the appeal of the parents who, in response to this measure, had claimed their precautionary suspension to be able to continue with schooling exclusively in Catalan.
The appeal of these parents came after the TSJC responded to the demand of some parents of a minor enrolled in P5 for their child to receive at least 25% of the classes in Spanish. The response to the request of these parents occurred almost simultaneously with the ratification by the Supreme Court of a previous decision of the TSJC in which, decisively, it extended 25% to the entire school system.
This coincidence caused the Generalitat to come out in a rush to question both this measure and the particular one applied in Canet, which made this last case become a symbol. The harassment on social networks suffered by the family of the Turó del Drac center further poisoned the case. Demonstrations were called in front of the school, and the parents opposed to the judicial measure filed an appeal against it, today dismissed by the TSJC.
