Hey y’all, big news coming in from the Supreme Court! So, they’re gonna be hearing oral arguments next month about Trump’s plan to end automatic birthright citizenship. The court decided to hold off on a decision about narrowing down those injunctions that have been blocking the policy nationwide. So for now, the whole thing is still on hold.
When the court meets on May 15, they’re gonna discuss whether or not those judges overstepped their bounds by putting the brakes on Trump’s plan. Now, Trump and his crew have not been too happy about these judges getting in the way of their agenda. But hey, this whole nationwide injunction thing is nothing new in the legal world.
Basically, the 14th Amendment says that if you’re born in the U.S. (unless you’re a diplomat’s kid), you’re automatically a citizen. Trump, on the other hand, wants to change that up and make it so only folks with at least one parent who’s a U.S. citizen or green card holder can get citizenship.
At a press conference, Trump went on about how the 14th Amendment was meant for former slaves and that his side is gonna come out on top. But most legal experts and folks going up against him don’t see it that way. They’re saying Trump’s plan is totally against the Constitution, and every court that’s looked at it has shut it down.
So, the fight continues. Trump’s been trying to push this through since day one, but every court along the way has been saying nope. Now it’s all up to the Supreme Court to weigh in. Let’s see how this all plays out. Stay tuned!
