Sewa International’s Thanksgiving Banquet: A Night of Celebration and Service

On November 23, the Bay Area chapter of Sewa International hosted its 14th annual banquet at the Oshman Family Jewish Community Center in Palo Alto. This event marked a year of success for the organization, which is deeply rooted in the belief that “The entire world is one family.” Sewa International, a primarily volunteer-run Hindu faith-based nonprofit, is dedicated to serving underserved communities through various programs ranging from healthcare and education to disaster relief and senior care.

Volunteers at the Heart of Sewa

Started in 2007, the Bay Area chapter of Sewa International has grown significantly over the years, boasting 650 volunteers across 22 projects. These volunteers work tirelessly to make a difference, with close to 95% of the funds raised going directly towards community projects. The chapter’s impact is felt in twelve Bay Area cities with the help of 45 partner organizations, further emphasizing the organization’s commitment to serving those in need.

ASPIRE: Empowering Underserved Students

One of Sewa Bay Area’s most successful endeavors is the ASPIRE program, which provides free tutoring, homework assistance, meals, and enrichment workshops to children from underserved communities. Led by Program Director Sudha Prabhunandan, ASPIRE has seen remarkable growth, expanding its reach to more schools in Newark and Livermore. The program’s focus on academic progress and resilience has led to significant improvements in student performance and grades.

Recognizing Service and Talent

At the banquet, Sewa International honored its youth volunteers for their dedication and service. High school students who contributed a hundred hours of service were recognized with Presidential Volunteer Service Awards, highlighting the impact of youth involvement in community initiatives. Additionally, the evening featured a captivating performance by multi-instrumentalist Neil Nayyar, showcasing the diverse talents within the Bay Area community.

As Sewa International continues to expand its reach and impact, the spirit of service and community remains at the core of its mission. Through initiatives like ASPIRE and partnerships with dedicated individuals and organizations, Sewa International exemplifies the power of collective action in creating positive change. Join us in celebrating the spirit of giving back and supporting those in need.
