Climate activists have occupied a lecture hall at the University of Magdeburg. A spokeswoman for the Magdeburg local group of “End Fossil” announced on Wednesday night that the occupation of the Audimax is a part of blockade actions that have been taking place at several international educational institutions since Tuesday. Although the step is radical, it is “necessary because the political changes that we have been calling for within the climate justice movement for years are not being fulfilled.”
In addition to the demand for a socialization of energy production and debt relief for poorer countries, the action alliance is also about better education policy. According to the spokeswoman, education and science policy in Germany and especially in Saxony-Anhalt is characterized by bureaucracy and stagnation. The occupation should be maintained until there are concessions.
In January, climate activists had already occupied a lecture hall at the University of Halle for five days.
