Nationwide Singalong to Mark 80 Years Since VE Day

As the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day approaches, Bruno Peek, a pageant master for Queen Elizabeth II, is orchestrating a nationwide singalong to commemorate this historic milestone and unite the people of Britain. Known for his grand-scale tributes during the late Queen’s jubilees, Peek now aims to honor the end of World War II in Europe in a unique and heartwarming way.

On May 8, at 9:30pm, Peek is urging the entire nation to join together in singing the hymn “I Vow To Thee My Country” as a symbol of celebration and remembrance. This initiative is designed to bring Britons from all walks of life together in a moment of solidarity, without any political or religious affiliations, simply to honor the fallen soldiers who sacrificed so much for their country.

In an interview with the PA news agency, Peek expressed his hopes for this ambitious project, stating, “We want the whole country… to stop what they’re doing, stand up and sing this wonderful British hymn together, bringing the whole nation together in one special moment in time.” For Peek, the vision of a united nation singing in harmony is his ultimate goal, surpassing even his previous accolades such as being awarded an OBE and becoming a Commander of the Royal Victoria Order.

To further amplify the significance of this occasion, Peek has dedicated months to organizing various events leading up to VE Day, including a touching tribute to Scotland. Recognizing the contributions of Scotsmen, as well as Welsh and Irish soldiers, Peek has arranged for 20 bagpipe players across Scotland to perform a special composition, Celebratum, every morning for 80 days leading up to VE Day. This gesture not only honors the sacrifices made by these individuals but also highlights the importance of unity and shared history among the nations of the UK.

In addition to the musical tributes, more than 600 town criers across the UK are set to participate in events, and church bells will toll in remembrance of VE Day. Peek’s focus on involving local communities and showcasing the grassroots celebrations underscores the importance of honoring the past and reflecting on the freedoms enjoyed today.

As the countdown to VE Day continues, Peek’s efforts culminate in a beacon lighting ceremony to pay homage to those who perished during the war and to honor the dwindling number of surviving veterans. Describing the symbolism behind the beacons, Peek poignantly stated, “The light from the beacons always represents the light of peace that emerged from the dreadful darkness of war.” This final tribute serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by millions, both at home and abroad, so that future generations could live in freedom.

In a world often divided by politics and ideologies, the simple act of coming together in song and remembrance speaks volumes about the power of unity and shared heritage. As Peek eloquently puts it, “Let’s come together, celebrate and commemorate the millions who sacrificed their lives at home and abroad, so that we enjoy the freedom we do today.” This VE Day promises to be a poignant and unifying moment for the people of Britain, as they join voices in harmony to honor the past and look towards a brighter future.
