Oh boy, let’s talk about that Mexican navy ship crashing into the Brooklyn Bridge. So, like, many crew members from the tall ship that had that deadly collision have flown back home to Mexico. Seven officers and 172 cadets made it back to the port of Veracruz early Monday. Two other cadets are still in New York getting some medical treatment, but they’re doing okay, according to the navy.
The ship, called the Cuauhtemoc, had a major oopsie when its tall masts smacked right into the Brooklyn Bridge. Two crew members didn’t make it out alive, which is just tragic. The ship was backing up real fast and then, bam, right into the bridge. Some cadets were up on the ship’s yards when it happened, hanging on for dear life as the masts kinda collapsed. Scary stuff, man.
Now, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board is trying to figure out what went wrong. They think it might have been a mechanical issue. The ship was going the wrong way when it crashed, and even a tugboat couldn’t save the day in time. The investigation is gonna take forever, probably. The ship is just chilling at Pier 36, being watched over by the NYPD.
The Coast Guard is waiting for a plan to salvage the ship and do some final safety checks before towing it to the Brooklyn Navy Yard. They’re trying to make sure ferry service isn’t messed up during all this drama. Oh, and good news – the Brooklyn Bridge seems to be okay. The DOT says there’s no major damage, so all’s well that ends well, I guess.
In the end, 19 sailors needed some medical help, and sadly, two crew members lost their lives. One of them was a 20-year-old sailor studying engineering. Her family says she fell from one of the masts during the chaos. Most of the crew have left the ship and are heading back home, but some are still on board. The Cuauhtemoc was supposed to go to Iceland next, but who knows what’ll happen now. Tragic accident all around, that’s for sure.
