A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck the border area between Bosnia and Montenegro. According to the US Earthquake Observatory USGS, the epicenter of the quake on Thursday morning was around 30 kilometers from the Montenegrin town of Niksic and around 25 kilometers from the Bosnian town of Bileca.
Information about possible damage or injuries was initially not available. According to the USGS, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 7.6 kilometers and was felt in Bosnia’s capital Sarajevo, among other places.
A magnitude 5.7 earthquake in the same region in April 2022 left one dead and several injured. Earthquakes occur again and again in the Balkan states.
Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzegovina are among the so-called Western Balkan countries, which also include Albania, Serbia, North Macedonia and Kosovo. The EU has been conducting accession negotiations with Montenegro since 2012. Bosnia-Herzegovina has candidate status but is not yet in negotiations.
