A court in London has approved a settlement of £150 million (€170 million) in the legal dispute over damages for those affected and the survivors of the Grenfell fire disaster. This was reported by several British media from the courtroom in London’s High Court.
The sum is spread across 900 individual items in the class action lawsuit, according to the BBC report. An agreement had already emerged at the beginning of the year, but details were not yet known.
72 people died in the high-rise fire in the London district of Kensington in June 2017. The fire that broke out on one of the lower floors had spread rapidly through the facade insulation of the social building. The fire brigade initially advised people to stay in the burning building and wait for help. For many, their homes became death traps.
Defendants reportedly included the Kensington and Chelsea Boroughs, the Fire Service and the siding manufacturer, among others. A possible criminal investigation is not affected by the settlement. So far, however, no one has been charged.
