Kanlaon Volcano Erupts, Emitting 5,000-Meter Tall Plumes — PHIVOLCS

On June 3, 2024, at 7:49 pm, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental is emitting plumes that rose to 5,000 meters. This marks a significant increase in volcanic activity, prompting PHIVOLCS to raise the alert level from 1 to 2 due to “increasing unrest.”

The eruption of Mt. Kanlaon began at 6:51 p.m. local time, with the volcano sending a vertical plume into the atmosphere. This event lasted for 6 minutes and was followed by a relatively strong volcanic-tectonic earthquake. PHIVOLCS recorded two volcanic earthquakes following the eruption.

“We also received reports of a sulfur smell and ash fall on the communities located at Kanlaon’s western slope. We are verifying this,” said Ma. Antonia Bornas, PHIVOLCS Volcano Monitoring and Eruption Prediction Division chief.

Residents of surrounding communities, including La Castellana town, La Carlota City, and Canlaon City, were warned of potential ash fall. Evacuation was urged for residents of Canlaon City, as they are within the 4-kilometer permanent danger zone.

“At this moment, there is no indication that the volcanic activity is worsening except for the continuous emission of plumes,” Bornas reassured.

Under Alert Level 2, elevated volcanic earthquakes, steam emissions, ground deformation, and hot spring temperatures are expected. PHIVOLCS also noted intermittent steam or ash explosions, along with increased inflation or swelling of the volcano’s structure.

Over a span of 24 hours from Sunday to Monday, PHIVOLCS recorded eight volcanic earthquakes and observed Kanlaon Volcano emitting 177 tons of sulfur dioxide on June 2. The situation continues to be monitored closely as the volcanic activity unfolds.

In conclusion, the eruption of Kanlaon Volcano has led to significant emissions and increased unrest, prompting PHIVOLCS to raise the alert level. Residents in nearby communities are advised to stay vigilant and follow evacuation protocols as necessary. The situation remains dynamic, and further updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
