The cinnamon-fruity scent of apple pie truly awakens homely feelings and memories – of warm summer days in grandma’s garden or cozy autumn evenings at home on the sofa, always with a piece of the juicy “all-time favorite” in hand.
Apple pie is one of the most popular cakes worldwide – and has been for more than six centuries. Even though it is often assumed that the “apple pie” comes from the USA, the dish’s true origins are in Europe, more precisely in England in the 15th century. The apple pie was first mentioned in 1590, when the British dramatist Robert Greene provided the first written, truly poetic evidence of the pastry with “Your breath is like the smell of apple pie.” To this day, apple pie primarily evokes positive emotions – the scent of the sweet dish alone brings back childhood memories and conveys a feeling of security and home.
There are now almost countless variations of the sweet pastry, even Wikipedia defines apple pie as a “generic term for all fine baked goods that contain apples as the eponymous ingredient”. The range ranges from covered to sunken to strudeld apple pie, and includes a Swedish recipe, a French one, the “Classic American Pie” or an old German version – to name just a few. And while the grandmothers of the world will probably widen their eyes in horror at the idea of a microwave apple pie, this recipe is definitely worth a try and, thanks to the apple as the “name-giving ingredient,” has officially earned its place on the apple pie list .
In addition, the quick cup apple cake is not only prepared in a record time of less than three minutes, but also consists of just a handful of ingredients that can be found in almost every kitchen. The preparation couldn’t be simpler: an apple is cut into small pieces and mixed with egg, flour, baking powder, cinnamon and sugar as well as melted butter, a pinch of salt and a dash of flour. The cake goes into the microwave and is ready to eat after a minute or two. The best thing: The cake is now freshly baked, really juicy and can be enjoyed immediately – while still warm. Caution hot!
Tip: Discerning gourmets can serve a quick vanilla sauce with the lightning pastry from the cup. To do this, simply mix half a packet of vanilla pudding powder with 250 milliliters of milk and three tablespoons of sugar, bring to the boil and simmer on a low heat for about a minute.
