According to current statistics, the proportion of employees working from home in Germany increased sharply between 2020 and 2021 as a result of the corona pandemic – and with it the longer periods of sitting. So it’s hardly surprising why more and more employees are suffering from poor posture. In order to relieve the neck, shoulders and back, it is essential to regularly switch between a sitting and standing posture. The healthy change at the workplace is made possible with a height-adjustable standing desk.
It is common knowledge that sitting for long periods of time is not healthy and can lead to poor posture or even pain. A height-adjustable standing desk can be used to improve posture at work and counteract back problems. As the name suggests, the mobile desk can be individually adjusted to your height. This in turn has a decisive advantage: you adopt a healthy posture. Provided, of course, that the standing desk is at an optimal height. To make sure you have your standing desk set up correctly, here are a few things to keep in mind:
When working while standing, place your feet shoulder-width apart on the floor and make sure that your knees are slightly bent despite your firm footing. For a healthy posture, it is also important that you do not slouch or arch your back. Try to stand normally (upright) and relax your shoulders as much as possible. Most importantly, the angle between your upper and forearms is 90 degrees – and your forearms are resting on the tabletop.
Tip: You can easily calculate how high the standing desk should be here.
1. Relaxdays
By far the cheapest model of this round of introductions is provided by the company Relaxdays: The 4.9 kg high desk is height-adjustable and has castors for mobile use. Depending on your height, you can set the working height between 58 and 95 centimeters – the mechanism is operated via a simple screw thread. Laptops (up to 19 inches) and mice can easily be accommodated on two separate surfaces made of robust MDF.
2. Bontec
With a working height of 95 to 139 centimetres, this standing desk from Bontec is significantly larger than its predecessor. The four spacious areas offer enough space and can each carry a maximum of ten or 20 kilograms (only the upper monitor shelf and lower keyboard shelf) load. There are also four castors here, which you can use to push the mobile workstation anywhere. The standing desk is adjusted using two knobs.
3. Encounter
The height-adjustable standing desk made of MDF from Tojo is significantly more solid: The practical thing about the model is that it can be converted into a desk in just a few simple steps – because you can use it standing or sitting. The working height is between 62 centimeters (lowest position) and 113 centimeters (highest position). The 15-kilogram model does not have castors and is therefore not that easy to move.
4. DlandHome
This standing desk from DlandHome is available in three different colours: The working height can be adjusted between 70 and 115 centimetres, the maximum load capacity is an impressive 40 kilograms. The model can be moved thanks to two lockable castors – and still has a firm footing. One of the two separate work surfaces can be tilted individually to increase working comfort. According to the manufacturer, the materials are waterproof and scratch-resistant.
5. Harmony
The taillight of this series is the height-adjustable standing desk from Harmoni: Also made of wood (birch) like the most expensive model in this series, the computer desk itself is only 77 centimeters high. In order to be able to work on it while standing, the desk has to be placed on a table – then you can set the desired working height individually using two plates. The shapely and modern design is less mobile, but a real eye-catcher.
