gop-mega-bill-fails-in-house-budget-committee-setback-for-johnson-and-trump

GOP holdouts made it super complicated to move the bill forward out of the House Budget Committee. The vote on the massive bill, aimed at pushing President Donald Trump’s agenda, flopped in the House Budget Committee on Friday afternoon due to objections from hard-liners. The committee vote tanked with only 16 lawmakers supporting it, while 21 voted against.

Several hard-liners hinted that they would mess up the tax and budget measure because they were worried it would add to the already bloated national debt. The holdouts, including Republican Reps. Ralph Norman, Chip Roy, and Andrew Clyde, threatened to stop the package from moving out of the House Budget Committee, which met on Friday morning. Speaker Mike Johnson and Trump faced a setback as they tried to get the holdouts to get on board with the bill.

Speaker Mike Johnson had a tough time getting the more than 1,000-page “Big Beautiful Bill Act” back on track in the last few days. He met with the hard-liners to try and keep things moving forward. This whole situation was another challenge for Johnson’s speakership as he tried to please the hard-liners and bring the different factions of his conference together. Johnson worked to find common ground on the SALT caps, which are the amount of state and local taxes that can be deducted on federal tax returns, as moderates strongly opposed the proposed $30,000 cap on those deductions.

Not really sure why this matters, but Johnson mentioned on Friday that he was keeping President Donald Trump updated on the latest developments with the massive package and that the president was pretty excited about the House’s “forward progress.” So, maybe it’s just me, but it seems like there’s a lot of drama happening around this bill.
