A driver killed two pedestrians and injured several others while fleeing the police in downtown Madrid. The trigger for the death drive was apparently the attempt to evade a police check with subsequent punishment: the man accelerated when the police wanted to stop him because a baby was not sitting in the car in the prescribed child seat. At high speed, he then hit several pedestrians one after the other in the busy Paseo de Extremadura street in the Latina district, two of whom died. According to the newspaper “El Pais”, the dead are two men aged 72 and 81. Three other people were slightly injured, the rescue service said on Twitter. The car came to a standstill with a shattered windshield.

There were two men and a woman and the baby in the car. All three adults are criminals known to the police, who have been on record for numerous thefts, among other things, the newspaper “El PaĆs” reported, citing police circles. The woman and the other passenger were arrested on the spot, and the baby was taken into the care of the youth welfare office. The driver was initially able to flee on foot, but turned himself in to a guard hours later, the police said.
