In view of the energy crisis, the Rhineland-Palatinate Association of Cities calls for flexibility in municipal energy saving measures. “It can certainly involve the closure of sports facilities or swimming pools, but there will be no solution that suits all municipalities equally,” said managing director Lisa Diener in an interview with the German Press Agency.
The cities would weigh up the interests of sport and culture because they knew how much culture had suffered from the corona restrictions, Diener said. Culture has an important function and is more in demand than ever in the current situation. “We have to be careful not to permanently destroy things that will never come back,” warned Managing Director Michael Mätzig. “Better to go to the theater with a bobble hat than not at all.” The City Council sees the greatest potential for savings in swimming pools and schools.
