A private university for medical courses was opened in Thuringia in the summer semester. The state-recognized HMU Health and Medical University appointed the first six professors in Erfurt on Thursday and took on around 90 medical students and 20 prospective psychologists. Partner of the HMU is the Helios Klinikum Erfurt, said Managing Director Ilona Renken-Olthoff. The HMU in Erfurt is part of a private university group with currently more than 7000 students and independent locations in Potsdam, Berlin and Hamburg.

According to Renken-Olthoff, the students pay 1,500 euros a month for their training. There are study financing options: Loans from a special fund are possible. Access to medical training is not restricted to “children of wealthy parents”, as is commonly assumed.

In Erfurt, the number of students at the HMU is expected to rise to around 2,000 by the end of the decade. Science Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee (SPD) spoke of an addition to the state university system with its around 47,000 students in Thuringia.
