Russia had previously announced that it had requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council. “We have just called for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council due to the threat to peace and security posed by US attacks on Syria and Iraq,” said Russian Deputy Ambassador to the UN Dmitry Polyansky.

Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry in Moscow said: “Washington, confident of its impunity, continues its sowing of chaos and destruction in the Middle East.” The State Department added that it “strongly condemned” the attacks.

The US bombed targets in Iraq and Syria on Saturday night in response to a deadly drone attack in Jordan. The White House blamed Iran-backed militias in Iraq for the attack that left three dead on the border with Syria and Iraq at the end of January.
