Severe weather wreaked havoc across multiple states with reports of at least 23 people dead from the US heartland to the East Coast. Kentucky bore the brunt of the devastation with 14 casualties, followed by 7 in Missouri and 2 in Virginia. The aftermath left over 600,000 people without power spanning from Michigan to Tennessee. Remnant storms from Friday’s chaos spilled over into Saturday morning, with a total of 26 tornadoes reported in Kentucky, Indiana, Missouri, Illinois, and surprisingly, one in New Jersey. Not to mention the softball-sized hail in Barlow, Kentucky, and near Sullivan, Indiana, with hail as big as tennis balls causing havoc from Texas to Ohio.
Damage assessments are underway in 15 states affected by hail, winds, and tornadoes stretching from Missouri to Michigan and out to New Jersey. The East-Central United States is still grappling with severe storms moving from Arkansas to Virginia. Additionally, southeastern Arkansas, north-central Alabama, and central Mississippi are under a severe thunderstorm watch until 10 a.m. CT, while northern South Carolina, west-central North Carolina, and southern Virginia are on alert until 12 p.m. ET. The storms have already caused quarter-size hail and damage from fallen trees and roofs with the threat expected to linger into late Saturday morning. In the Northeast, the focus is on upstate New York, western Massachusetts, Vermont, and western New Hampshire, with cities like Burlington, Springfield, and Albany facing the risks of damaging winds, large hail, and potential tornadoes. Meanwhile, central Texas, including Dallas and Arlington, is at the epicenter of the threat in the South-Central Plains, with other areas in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kansas also on high alert including cities like Oklahoma City, Little Rock, and Wichita.
