Curious accident on Thursday morning in Erfurt: A truck driver pushed a car and driver about 200 meters across an intersection – only then did he notice the car in front of his truck. As the police reported, the 51-year-old driver had resistance when starting initially thought to be a defect in the brakes. From his elevated position in the driver’s cab, he apparently could not immediately see the vehicle in front of him.
An eyewitness video also released by the police documents the incident. It was taken from another car. The recording shows how the truck with the car in front slowly drives off, stops briefly, and then accelerates again and crosses the intersection. “He doesn’t notice, does he?” a man’s voice asks in disbelief, only to confirm: “He doesn’t notice!” The whole thing is accompanied first by one, then by two continuously operated car horns.
How did this accident happen? According to the police report, the driver wanted to turn left at the traffic light crossing Weimarische Straße/Eisenberger Straße on Thursday morning. “Since the traffic light was ‘red’ for a long time, he decided to drive straight into town,” the police wrote. He then overlooked a car with a 32-year-old driver who was offset in front of the truck in the straight lane. The truck touched the car so that it turned in front of the tractor unit, it is said. After about 200 meters, the truck driver stopped “to make sure everything was right” and realized his mistake. Nobody was injured, the property damage is around 13,000 euros, according to the police.
