After the fatal attack on a taxi driver in Berlin-Grunewald, a suspect is in custody in Schleswig-Holstein. It is a 24-year-old against whom there was already an arrest warrant, as the Berlin public prosecutor announced on Easter Sunday.
The authority now wants to apply for another arrest warrant against the man because of the knife attack in Berlin, as a spokesman said on Monday. The suspect could then be transferred from Flensburg to Berlin at the end of the week at the earliest.
Arrested on Easter Saturday
According to the public prosecutor’s office, the 24-year-old was arrested on Saturday in northern Germany. “He was brought before an investigating judge in Flensburg on the basis of an existing arrest warrant against him and is now in custody,” it said.
The 24-year-old is accused of killing a 49-year-old taxi driver on Thursday morning. The man died in hospital after the attack. A passer-by found him in the Grunewald residential area in Berlin. Witnesses were still trying to save the man. However, he died in hospital.
According to the public prosecutor’s office, the suspect got into the taxi on Thursday morning at the Berlin-Südkreuz train station – a good eight kilometers from where the seriously injured taxi driver was later found. The 24-year-old later returned to this station, as it was said.
“Image” and “B.Z.” reported that the man was recognized by special police officers known as super-recognizers. Such experts have special facial recognition skills and can recognize people in large crowds, for example.
Motive of fact still unclear
According to the public prosecutor’s office, the background and motive for the crime in southwest Berlin with magnificent villas and some prominent residents are still unclear. “He has not yet been granted a legal hearing on the local allegation,” said the spokesman for the public prosecutor’s office. The spokesman could not say why there was an arrest warrant for the man in Schleswig-Holstein.
According to “Bild” and “B.Z.” the investigators do not assume that the driver and perpetrator knew each other. The newspapers had reported that the taxi driver had been stabbed in the neck. The public prosecutor’s office did not provide any information on this, but spoke of a knife attack.
