After the alleged killing of a woman in Austria, an uninvolved driver died when the suspect escaped. As the police announced on Sunday, the 39-year-old woman received numerous stab wounds all over her body the day before in her apartment building in Graz. A kitchen knife was found at the crime scene as a suspected murder weapon.

On Saturday morning, a neighbor found the woman covered in blood and sounded the alarm. She died despite attempts at resuscitation. According to police, a 28-year-old suspect who was involved with the woman fled the scene in a car. Just a few hundred meters away, he crashed head-on into another vehicle. Its driver died in the accident.

After an initial examination of the scene of the accident and the vehicles, the investigators assume that the fugitive caused the accident on purpose because he wanted to commit suicide, as a police spokeswoman for the German Press Agency said. Photos from the scene of the collision showed a car with the engine compartment and driver’s door ripped apart and another seriously damaged car.

The suspect was seriously injured. He was put into an artificial deep sleep and was therefore not initially asked about the alleged murder, said the spokeswoman. So far, the investigations have shown that he and the woman have known each other for several months and are in a relationship. The motive is still unclear.
