CSU regional group leader Alexander Dobrindt calls for tougher penalties for climate activists and sticks to his controversial warning of a “climate RAF”. “We are noticing an increasing radicalization in parts of the climate movement. Criminals are acting here and not climate activists,” said the Bavarian politician to the newspapers of the Funke media group. “Therefore, we urgently need stricter laws against these climate offenders – firstly with minimum prison sentences and secondly with preventive detention.”
So far, activists have committed crimes such as property damage and coercion, said Dobrindt. But this could also end “in the exercise of violence”. “That’s why I’m sticking to it: we have to prevent a climate RAF from emerging.” The term refers to the Red Army Faction (RAF), a left-wing extremist terrorist group whose supporters murdered high-ranking personalities from politics and business in the 1970s to 1990s. Dobrindt had previously encountered severe criticism for using the term.
The Last Generation group had announced that it would “peacefully bring the capital Berlin to a standstill” indefinitely from Monday (April 24). She is calling on politicians to come up with a plan to achieve the 1.5 degree target, which is intended to prevent the worst consequences of global warming.
The Berlin police are now checking a video circulating on the Internet for possible misconduct by officials during a climate protest by the group. In a tweet, the police spoke of a “coercive measure by a colleague” that can be seen on it. Accordingly, it comes from a mission on Thursday. On that day, climate activists protested in various places in Berlin.
