Tear gas, intrusions by climbing on barriers, impatient crowds…After being a good child for many years, the atmosphere became tense as the match approached.
The organizers had to delay kickoff for over 30 minutes. This caused frustration among spectators who paid for tickets, but were unable to attend the first half.
A security guard informed a young woman outside the gates that her ticket wouldn’t be accepted. Estelle Mossely, the 2016 Olympic boxing champ, is this woman. She gets mad and says, “The ticket doesn’t pass, it’s absurd, I’ve been waiting an hour,” A few minutes before the second half ends, she will be allowed to enter.
UEFA argued, to explain the chaos, that it was caused by “thousands of spectators with counterfeit tickets”.
The atmosphere was tense less than 30 minutes after the match began. At least 1000 supporters were stopped by the gendarmes before they could enter the stadium. They yelled “Open the gate!” while the fans couldn’t pass one at a time. Real intrusions then undermined the system.
Security guards and the gendarmes began to pursue them, in an effort to get them out as soon as possible. An anonymous security guard said, “It’s very poorly organized.” The game of cat-and-mouse continued even after the match had ended. The police were called to the scene shortly before 10:10 p.m. and caused a large crowd to move.
Liverpool fans were furious and stayed outside with their tickets.
Gerald Darmanin pointed out Saturday night that “thousands” of British supporters had not received tickets or were using fake tickets to get in. He blamed them for the chaos at the Stade de France on Saturday evening.
The Minister of the Interior, in a tweet, along with a photo of him, Amelie Oudea–Castera, and the Minister for Sports, stated that “thousands” of British supporters forced entry to the Stade de France security headquarters.
“Thank you to all the police forces that mobilized this evening, in such a difficult context,” said Mr. Darmanin, as controversy erupted over the circumstances in which France won the final, which was won by Real Madrid two years prior. The organization of the Olympic Games at Paris.
