Two high school students from Homestead High School, Arhan Chakravarthy and Samik Thakur, embarked on a remarkable journey to raise awareness about dementia and influence federal legislation. Their initiative, Project Preserve, launched in August through the school’s Future Business Leaders of America club, aimed to shed light on the often overlooked issue of dementia in healthcare policies.

The students recognized the staggering impact of dementia on millions of Americans and saw a need for change. They decided to advocate for the NAPA Reauthorization Act (HR 619) and the Alzheimer’s Accountability and Investment Act (HR 620), critical pieces of legislation that would address the challenges faced by individuals living with dementia. Their efforts proved successful, as both bills were eventually passed into law, marking a significant achievement for the young changemakers.

One of the key components of Project Preserve was the creation of a podcast titled “The Mind Matters: Understanding Dementia.” This podcast featured experts in cognitive health and dementia care, providing valuable insights and information to a wide audience. With over 1,200 listeners tuning in, the podcast became a powerful tool for spreading awareness and sparking conversations about dementia.

In addition to the podcast, Arhan and Samik developed an interactive platform called Brain Boggle. This platform was designed to help users exercise their cognitive skills and track their progress, offering a fun and engaging way to learn more about dementia and its effects. With over 500 unique visitors engaging with Brain Boggle, the initiative proved to be a hit among those looking to better understand dementia.

To further involve the community in their cause, the students organized volunteer opportunities at Crescent Oaks Memory Care, where their classmates could interact with seniors and participate in memory games and social activities. This hands-on approach not only benefited the seniors but also allowed the students to gain firsthand experience and perspective on the challenges faced by individuals living with dementia.

Their tireless efforts did not go unnoticed, as Arhan and Samik received recognition from various officials, including U.S. Sen. Adam Schiff, Congressman Ro Khanna, and state Sens. Josh Becker, Dave Cortese, and Aisha Wahab. Their dedication and passion for making a difference in the lives of those affected by dementia inspired many and served as a shining example of the impact that young individuals can have on their communities.

Behind the Scenes: The Inspiration and Drive

Arhan and Samik’s journey began with a simple observation – the lack of emphasis on dementia in healthcare policies. This realization sparked a fire within them, driving them to take action and advocate for change. Their commitment to raising awareness and pushing for legislative reforms was fueled by a deep sense of empathy and a desire to make a positive impact on society.

Drawing inspiration from personal experiences and a genuine desire to help others, the students poured their hearts and souls into Project Preserve. They spent countless hours researching, planning, and executing their initiatives, facing challenges and obstacles along the way but never losing sight of their ultimate goal. Their unwavering determination and passion for their cause propelled them forward, driving them to overcome adversity and make a real difference in the fight against dementia.

Looking Ahead: The Legacy of Project Preserve

As Arhan and Samik’s project continues to make waves and inspire others, its legacy serves as a testament to the power of youth activism and the importance of raising awareness about critical issues like dementia. The impact of Project Preserve extends far beyond its initial goals, sparking conversations, fostering connections, and driving positive change in communities across the country.

By shining a spotlight on dementia and advocating for legislative reforms, Arhan and Samik have left an indelible mark on the fight against this debilitating condition. Their efforts have not only raised awareness but also inspired others to take action and make a difference in the lives of those affected by dementia. As their story continues to unfold, it serves as a powerful reminder of the potential for change that lies within each of us, no matter our age or background.
