Alrighty, so get this – Prime Minister Anthony Albanese just snagged himself a second three-year term in a row, making him the first Aussie PM to do so in 21 years. Opposition leader Peter Dutton threw in the towel after Saturday’s election, admitting, “We kinda dropped the ball during this campaign, no denying that tonight, and I’ll take the blame for it.” He even had the decency to call up the PM and congratulate him on his win. Classy move, Dutton.

The Australian Electoral Commission did some math and figured Albanese’s Labor Party nabbed 70 seats, while the conservative coalition got 24 seats in the House of Reps. Looks like the minor parties and independent candidates might snag 13 seats, just to keep things interesting. ABC’s election guru, Antony Green, is calling it for Labor with 76 seats, the coalition with 36, and the rest doing their own thing. Basically, Labor’s got this in the bag.

Now, the hot topics of the campaign were energy policy and inflation. Both sides agree that Aussies are feeling the pinch when it comes to the cost of living. Dutton’s Liberal Party is pointing fingers at government spending, vowing to chop a bunch of public service jobs to save some cash. Meanwhile, Albanese’s crew is all about that net-zero emissions by 2050, but Dutton thinks nuclear power is the way to go for cheap electricity.

Labor’s been throwing shade at Dutton, calling him “DOGE-y Dutton” and accusing him of channeling his inner Trump. They’re not fans of the whole American-style politics vibe he’s putting out there. According to Albanese, that’s not how they roll down under. Plus, he’s been smoothing things over with China, getting rid of trade barriers that were costing Aussie exporters a pretty penny.

On top of all that, there’s a cost of living crisis going on. Foodbank Australia says millions of households are struggling to put food on the table, which is a pretty big deal. The central bank even cut interest rates to help folks out. And with the Baby Boomers getting outnumbered by the young’uns, both sides are promising to help first-time homebuyers crack into the property market.

Labor had a slim majority going into the election, but things might get tricky if they lose more than two seats. They could end up trying to run the show with some help from the independents. It wouldn’t be the first time Australia’s had a minority government, but it’s always a bit of a headache to sort out.

So yeah, Albanese pulled off a win, Dutton’s licking his wounds, and the Aussies are facing some tough times ahead. But hey, that’s politics for you. Who knows what’s gonna happen next? Not me, that’s for sure. But hey, that’s the beauty of it all, right?
