Two people died in a collision between three cars after driving the wrong way on Autobahn 40 between Gelsenkirchen and Bochum. The 54-year-old wrong-way driver landed on Friday morning after colliding with two vehicles with her car on the opposite lane, said a police spokeswoman.

The wrong-way driver and a man from one of the two cars caught died, the other driver was seriously injured. It is not yet clear why the woman drove on the wrong side. According to the fire department, there was one person in each of the three accident cars. According to a spokesman for the Dortmund police, a murder commission was set up by the Bochum police in the matter. There were no further details at first.

The A40 was temporarily blocked in both directions between Bochum and Essen. Traffic jams formed. The blockage was lifted on Friday morning.
