Soccer professional Marcel Franke from the second division club Karlsruher SC is hoping to play in the DFB Cup after donating his stem cells. “I trained again for the first time on Monday morning and I’m hoping for a successful cup game on Wednesday,” said the central defender on TV station Sport1. The KSC has to compete in the second round of the cup against league rivals SV Sandhausen on Wednesday evening (6 p.m.).
Franke missed Saturday’s game against SV Darmstadt 98 because he donated stem cells on Thursday. “The whole thing had a certain amount of preparation with some preliminary investigations. After the call I went to the coaching team and told them that I would like to do it. They were immediately enthusiastic that I wanted to do it,” said the 29-year-old.
Franke had himself typed during his time in Fürth. Three months ago, the call came that he was close to a potential stem cell donation. “It was clear to all of us that we would definitely do it. It’s a good feeling to hopefully be able to save someone’s life,” Franke had previously reported.
